CMS Frequently Asked Questions

WebGUI at AIMTec

Here are some commonly asked questions about operating a WebGUI site that is hosted by AIMTec.

Q: How do I update the content on my web site?
A: There are a number of ways, but the simplest is as follows:
 1. Browse to the page or article you want to change
 2. Log in using your user name and password
 3. Enter "admin mode" to see the edit controls
 4. Click "edit" and make your changes
While you are logged in you can navigate to any item of content and make changes, or add and delete content.

Q: How long does it take for the updates to be visible on the Web?
A: They will be visible as soon as you make them - or if you prefer you can schedule content to appear only after a certain date.

Q: Do I need to know HTML?
A: Certainly not! If you can do basic text formatting in Microsoft Word you will be able to use the visual on-line editor to enter and format your text as well as insert images and tables.

Q: How do I link to other pages in my web site?
A: Simply select the text that forms the hyperlink then select the target page from the easy-to-navigate page tree. If you ever move that page or change its address WebGUI will automatically fix the hyperlinks that reference it.

Q: How do I remember to change or remove the content when it is no longer current?
A: You can mark your content such that it no longer appears after a certain date. Combined with the ability to schedule when content will appear you can easily automate future changes.

Q: Can I re-use pictures and articles throughout my web site?
A: Yes - you can reuse the content in many places in your web site and if you edit it in one place the changes will automatically take place everywhere else. You can also keep a library of items on-line for future reuse and those items don't need to be visible anywhere on the site.

Q: How much time will it take to me learn how to use the system?
A: In less than an hour you will be comfortable with making basic rich-text and image updates to your web site, we do however recommend a minimum of half a day of training to make sure you are getting the most out of the system.

Q: Can I restrict access to certain parts of my site?
A: Depending on the WebGUI package that you subscribe to, you can create user accounts for your visitors and control what content they see when they log in.

Q: Can I track visits by people who haven't logged in - and maybe even tell where they have come from?
A: AIMTec has integrated the industry-standard AWStats package to allow you to easily view things like how many visits, where visitors entered your site, where they came from, and where they went. You will even be able to see what search terms they used to reach your site from Google and other search engines.

Q: Will the search engines be able to access my site?
A: Yes, you can control the web addresses of your pages to make them both search-engine and user friendly. Many similar systems don't allow this and the web addresses are very cryptic and in many cases prevent searching by Google.

Q: Will the search engines be able to access the private parts of my site?
A: No - only your authorised users can access restricted areas, and then only the areas and items that you permit them to.

Q: If I choose your WebGUI system will I be locked in?
A: No - it's important that you have total freedom to change. Unlike competing systems WebGUI is an industry standard database-driven web system that can be hosted in many different places. We will show and even encourage you to take regular copies of your site so that you can back it up or move it to another host if you so wish.

Q: What about the steak knives?

A: You mean "extras" thrown in to make it more enticing? Our system has many additional features, most of which will be of value you to you as you get to know them - so here is a small selection from our "But wait - there's more" list:

  • Events calendar system
  • Electronic newsletter enrolment
  • Product catalogue and shopping cart
  • Electronic forums and collaboration systems
